November News

MATH: We just completed Unit 2 and will be starting Unit 3 on Monday. We continue to have math fact quizzes on Fridays, I do see an improvement. I also sent home a copy of the IXL skills that can be practiced with each lesson we do. Your child should know how to pick the correct one.

  • SPELLING: New units each week (unless there are only 3 days of school that week). Packets are completed in class, homework should be varied and your child should try a different homework each night. CHECK FOR NEATNESS AND CORRECT SPELLING!

  • READING: Following characters closely. Our read aloud is WONDER and we discuss the characters closely, examine their traits and try to empathize with them. We call it “stepping into their shoes”. Your child is also reading for stamina and should be keeping up with their reading log every day, reading at least 20 minutes. If they are reading an average of 7 pages every 10 minutes, then they are reading a book at their appropriate independent reading level. CAN'T WAIT TO FINISH WONDER SO THAT WE CAN SEE THE MOVIE AND COMPARE IT TO THE BOOK!!

  • WRITING: We are in the process of celebrating our Personal Narrative unit, concentrating on a “show not tell” beginning and adding the details to make the story come to life for the reader. It took a lot of work but our mentor texts and Wonder have really helped the students add more details to their writing. I am very pleased with the finished pieces.

  • WORD WORK/GRAMMAR: Latin root words are being written on index cards and added to a ring. Challenge your child to find them in their daily life. Parts of a sentence are being discussed in Grammar.

  • SOCIAL STUDIES: The Regions of New Jersey unit is over.

  • SCIENCE: We have begun our brand new Science curriculum. The unit title is Classifying Living Things and the program incorporates a lot of hands on work and problem solving. The students seem to be enjoying it.
