MATH: We are in the middle of Unit 4. This unit is a pretty thorough introduction to Multi-digit multiplication and the students are shown various ways to solve multiplication problems which include: partial product, lattice method and then the traditional method. The partial product method uses place value to show why the answer is what is and what numbers we are actually multiplying. By the end of the month we will have completed a Mid Year math fact test and a Mid Year test. Unit 5, if we get to it this month, will cover fractions. We continue to have math fact quizzes on Fridays, I do see an improvement. I also sent home a copy of the IXL skills that can be practiced with each lesson we do. Your child should know how to pick the correct one.

  • SPELLING: New units each week (unless there are only 3 days of school that week). Packets are completed in class, homework should be varied and your child should try a different homework each night. CHECK FOR NEATNESS AND CORRECT SPELLING!

  •

  • READING: We read a lot of great books this year so far! I saw the Wonder movie and thought they did a pretty good job, but there is nothing like the book! We also read a lot of picture books so that we could practice finding the theme, or big idea. We have just begun a Non-fiction reading unit where we focus on what the author is trying to teach us and what text structures were used to convey information. It will also tie in with our Social Studies unit.

  •

  • WRITING: We completed a literary essay where the students chose one of the books we read and a theme they believed was taught in that particular book. Then they had to substantiate their choice by giving three specific quotes from the book to show evidence. Next, we will focus on non-fiction writing, this will also tie in with Social Studies for now.

  •

  • WORD WORK/GRAMMAR: Latin root words are being written on index cards and added to a ring. Challenge your child to find them in their daily life. Parts of a sentence are being discussed in Grammar.

  •

  • SOCIAL STUDIES: We have started a quick unit on the Lenni Lenape Indians. Your child was assigned to a group where they will research a specific topic such as shelter, clothing, life style, etc. They will work in a group to answer questions, design a way of presenting their findings and share with the rest of the class.

  •

  • SCIENCE: The science unit is completed for now.
