5th Grade

Students in Fair Lawn's fifth grade Art program have gained a strong understanding of the fundamentals in Art.  Through grades 1-4, they have developed and enhanced their knowledge of the Elements of Art and the process by which they apply them to the Principles of Design.

Using a combination of line, shape, color, value, space, and texture; the students are able to execute a variety of works in a variety of media.  These projects explore the world around them, but more importantly, encompasses the students' point of view in an empowering, creative manner.  The Principles of Art take these elements and organize them so a work of art is pleasing to the artist and its viewers.

Balance keeps the elements arranged in a way that makes all of an artworks' parts visible.  Patterns are represented in everything we see, from the way a plant grows to the shingles on a house.  Contrast is a concept needed to show differences between various parts of the piece.  Rhythm in Art is a key component as it is in our everyday actions, walking, breathing, talking, blinking, and naturally, music.  Repetition of an element of art shows rhythm at its best.  Movement in a work of art encourages the viewers eye to travel through the entire piece.  Emphasis or a pieces' focal point shows an artists' point of view.

All of the Elements and Principles lead the artist and the viewer to a complete harmonious, unified piece of art.  The students' ultimate goal is to travel through the experience gathering knowledge, confidence, and a deeper creative ability.
